WWIB: (not so?) basic black edition

Black was a popular colour (or lack thereof) on the red carpet this week!

Rachel Bilson stepped out to amfAR's inaugural Milan Fashion Week event in a classy floor-length Ferragamo number on Monday.

The cast of Whip It, meanwhile, had a little fun in black at the movie's L.A. premiere on Tuesday.

Drew Barrymore rocked a fitted L’Wren Scott dress. Love the Casadei shoes. Don't love the wavy hair.

Ellen Page looked awkward as usual in a long-sleeved minidress.

And Juliet Lewis stepped out in a stylized garbage bag. Huzzah!

Drew's my pick for best dressed. What do y'all think?

Why hello there, Alanis Morissette!

Alanis Morissette is bringing sexy back in this new photo shoot by Miguel Starcevich.

And I'm feelin' it! Legs for days!

Guaranteed Dave Coulier is staring at these photos and wondering how he lost Alanis all those years ago.

(My guess: she got fed up with the Rocky and Bullwinkle impressions).

Jason Priestley coming to Canadian TV

Jason Priestley has signed on to star in Meet Phil Fitz, a new series that will air in 2010 on The Movie Network and Movie Central.

The show will see the former Brandon Walsh star as an immoral used car salesman dealing with a squeaky clean new colleague.

Can we get Luke Perry on board to play the colleague, for a total role reversal?

The show is set to shoot in Halifax, bringing the Vancouver-born Priestley back to Canada.

Gossip Girl line of the week

"You and Chuck are two of the most self centered damaged people I know. Somehow two wrongs make a twisted right." -- Serena to Blair

How do we feel about . . .

. . . Janet Jackson's look at amfAR's inaugural Milan Fashion Week event at La Permanente on Monday?

The hair's a bit of a mess for me, but I'm thining the dress is pretty hot.

That's an hourglass figure even Joan Holloway would envy!

Earlier this month Janet released a new track called Make Me on her official website, believed to be the first single from an album planned for Spring 2009.

Nickelodeon coming to Canada

Corus Entertainment is launching Nickelodeon in Canada in November, bringing a new slew of kids shows I've never heard of to Canadian audiences.

When I think Nickelodeon, I think Rugrats, a cartoon I stood behind in my adolescence. But apparently that's so 1998.

The new specialty channel will see Fanboy and Chum Chum and The Troop air in Canada for the first time. It will also air SpongeBob SquarePants, iCarly, Dora The Explorer and The Backyardigans.

Canadian programs on the specialty channel will include titles airing on other Corus networks YTV and Treehouse.

POP Montreal starts tomorrow!

Just because summer's over doesn't mean the music's stopped!

Taking place tomorrow through Sunday, POP Montreal will see more than 400 live performances at almost 50 venues across -- you guessed it! -- Montreal.

Highlights are sure to include:
  • Performances by Fever Ray (Of The Knife), Butthole Surfers, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Loudon Wainwright III, Clues, Think About Life, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Amy Millan, Jay Reatard, and the super fun ridiculous Matt & Kim
  • Sufjan Stevens, who is playing a small show at Cabaret that sold out in a day
  • tUnE-yArDs, soon to be traveling with Dirty Projectors on their European tour
  • a TON of secret shows. (last year Patrick Watson played two secret shows at a tiny church that fit only about 40 people and it was magic. This year is sure to be just as great, but I can't tell you why!!!)
  • a full line up of film, art, arts & crafts and symposium programming

So if you're not doing anything over the next five days, get your ass to Montreal! And if you do have things to do, shirk your responsibilities and get your ass to Montreal!

A POP pass is $85 and gets you into any show, or individual show tickets are also available. All the venues are generally a five minute bike ride away from each other, and the festival rents bikes for your convenience.

Ch-check out POP Montreal's website for more info.

Flashpoint staying strong in Canada

The return of CTV's Flashpoint Friday night brought the Toronto-based show its biggest audience to date -- 1.88 million viewers.

This is a big deal for the Canadian-American coproduction, as CBS has failed to commit to the show beyond an additional nine-episode order which aren't yet scheduled to air. The eye net's acquisition of Medium has bumped Flashpoint from its usual Friday timeslot stateside.

That doesn't worry series star Enrico Colantoni, however.

"We've got a life in Canada and the rest of the world," he says. "If CBS wants it, awesome. If they don't, we're still working. We're still making these shows."

With ratings like that, I'm inclined to believe him.

Monday deliciousness

Oh my.

Ch-check out this behind-the-scenes video of photographer Tyler Shields' shoot with actor Matt Dallas.

You may recognize Dallas as the star of the defunct ABC Family series Kyle XY.

Last week he also popped up in the series premiere of Eastwick on ABC.

I've got to say, however, this photoshoot is probably some of his best work.

Happy Monday!

Hello again Hellogoodbye

One of my musical guilty pleasures Hellogoodbye is back with a new catchy single When We First Met.

Like the song? Then head on over to the band's MySpace, where signing up for its newsletter will get you the audio and video download for free, in addition to another song called Not Ever Coming Home.

Hey, the price is right. What do you have to lose?

Brothers & Sisters season three bloopers

Oh these season three bloopers from Brothers & Sisters have really made my day.

It's nice to know that while all that speculated drama was going on last season with Balthazar Getty, the cast was still having fun on set.

Did y'all watch the season four premiere last night? What do we think about the Kitty storyline? I just hope it doesn't get too depressing.

Also, I couldn't love Scotty anymore than I already do.

Look of the week: January Jones

I was kind of bored with Emmy style this year. Everyone looked good, but the dresses were pretty standard.

Mad Men's January Jones is one of the few to step out to the red carpet in something a little distinctive.

TV's Betty Draper flashed forward to 2009 in a silk satin evening gown with geometric bustier by Versace, and shoes by Jimmy Choo. Simple hair, flawless makeup.

That's how you stand out in a crowd!

Hot mess of the week: Analynne McCord

90210 star Annalynne McCord showed up to HBO's post-Emmys party on Sunday looking like psycho playmate Barbie -- not cute.

That necklace might work, if it wasn't paired with a bubblegum pink clutch and shoes, and a dress so short I'm afraid to look at the photo too long for fear I'll see . . . well, you know.

Oh Analynne McCord. You hot mess.

Neve Campbell joins Scream 4?

Looks like Scream fans may have something to squeal about.

According to writer Kevin Williamson's Twitter, looks like the film series' original star Neve Campbell may have finally signed on to Scream 4.

"Yes on Neve guys!" Williamson tweeted last night.

Neve had previously said no to anymore Scream-ing, causing Williamson to tweet earlier this summer, "Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won't do it. This sucks."

Jim and Pam Forever!

I take back what I said before -- this is the real magazine cover of the week!

The Office's Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski take the cover of this week's Entertainment Weekly, and discuss their characters' upcoming wedding.

“It’s about keeping this relationship as real as we can instead of making it a television romance,” explains Krasinski. “When you have two characters who are so perfect for each other, it’s a little weird for them to not get married. So you have to put that step in, whether it’s been done on television successfully before or not.”

For a super cute behind-the-scenes video from the cover shoot, click here.

Help?

With the new TV season underway it's become abundantly clear there's just too much great stuff going on in pop culture for me to blog about (while also keeping up with my thriving social life).

So here's another shameless plea for guest blogs. As readers of outisthrough.com, you've already proven you have incredible taste, and some affinity for the slimy, sass-filled and snarky.

All you've got to do is apply some of that sass to a relevant topic like, say, Glee, So You Think You Can Dance, Gossip Girl (or anything else pop culture)! Seriously, I trust you have important, or at least entertaining, things to say.

Get in touch -- outisthru[at]gmail.com.

Otherwise I'm going to have to continue using private gchat convo's with my friends as posts (which y'all seem to be responding well to anyway).

Is it just me . . .

. . . or is Rihanna sporting some seriously fugly hair? Not to mention the makeup, dress and boots.

The singer was spotted looking all kinds of wrong in New York City Tuesday night.

I'm sad to say I haven't been feeling Rihanna's style for the past little while, and this is just the worst.

Is she running out of ideas? Does her stylist hate her? There has to be a reason for this!

Something new for Private Practice

I quit watching Private Practice after its first season because I decided I love myself enough to not put up with that shit.

All the whining and random hookups and adolescent emotions -- from adults! in the medical profession! -- was too much to handle.

Looks like producers took some time over the summer to rethink the show, however, based on the above season three promo photo.

Now this group of whiny professionals is leaving the doctor's office behind, and dragging their office furniture down to the beach so they can just lounge; listen to the waves; get their shoes and bottom of pants unnecessarily wet.

I particularly love the tagline on this poster, "Everything gets better with practice." As if to say "Yeah, season one sucked, season two was spastic . . . just wait for the crap we feed you in season three!"

So You Think You Can Dance Canada top 10

Last night's So You Think You Can Dance Canada saw Daniel Dory and Corynne Baron eliminated, leaving 10 competitors left with four weeks to go.

Amy Gardner, 21, a Contemporary dancer from Calgary, AB
Austin Di Iulio, 20, a Contemporary dancer from Mississauga, ON
Cody Bonnell, 19, a Hip-Hop dancer from Unionville, ON.
Emanuel Sandhu, 28, a Contemporary/Ballet dancer from Vancouver, BC.
Everett Smith, 25, a Tap dancer from Glen Morris, ON.
Jayme Rae Dailey, 21, a Contemporary dancer from Montreal, QB.
Kim Gingras, 23, a Hip-Hop dancer from Montreal, QB.
Melanie Mah, 19, a Contemporary dancer from Richmond Hill, ON.
Tara-Jean Popowich, 20, a Contemporary dancer from Lethbridge, AB.
Vincent Desjardins, 20, a Ballroom dancer from Trois-Rivières, QB.

I've got to be honest, the show's been losing me the past few weeks, though Austin Di Iulio usually grabs my attention.

I'm kind of over the choreographers' apparent need to see how "sexy" they can make a routine. I just want to see great dancing, I don't need crotch grabbing.

And based on the judges' "critiques" they may as well change the name of the show to So You Think You Can Do A Decent Job At A Dance Routine Outside Of Your Genre.

It takes everything in me not to throw a tantrum every time Jean Marc Genereux says "I loved it" about a truly mediocre routine.

Here's hoping the competition heats up now that we're down to the top 10, and the dancers will be switching partners!

Magazine cover of the week

There's nothing like exploiting a baby to make the world see you as a little more likeable!

Seriously, Katherine Heigl seems so much more human after seeing her snuggle 10-month-old daughter Naleigh on the cover of this week's People.

Heigl and husband Josh Kelley recently adopted the child from North Korea.

Seriously, so cute! Congratulations happy family!

Sightings!

Outisthrough.com correspondent Renee is in New York this week and is totally delivering on the celeb sightings!

Already this week she's spotted three stars of Gossip Girl!

First, on Monday, she spotted Chace Crawford and Jessica Szohr on location . . .

Sadly, she's being mum on details of this sighting, probably because she knows I'll get super jel of the time she spent with my future husband. ("I'll never tell. XOXO").

Thankfully, however, she's a little bit more open about her Penn Badgley encounter from yesterday. . .

In her words:
Dan Humphrey walked by me today while I was deciding whether I should go left or right. He went straight so I followed. I waited for him as he went into the store and tried to remember his real name - it never came to me - so I have two pics of his backside. I know Jackie and I would always say that we didn't see what others saw in him (and I'm a member of Team Chuck) but he's really good looking in person. I think he noticed me stalking as he took off his sunglasses and smiled. I spotted him on 3rd Ave between 20th and 21st - he went down 21st where I assume he was going home to cook for Ed (aka Chuck - see I know his name!) I would have followed but didn't want to be a total stalker and was on my way to NYU. I love NYC.... 3 Main Gossip Girl actor sightings in 2 days :-)

Oh my, please stalk away! And bring one of 'em back for me as a souvenir!

Finally, Renee offers the following spoiler of the above unrecognized character:

that guy on the dock.....Falls in and can't swim.

Hey Renee, if you see Blake Lively this week, be sure to let her know her Emmy hair looked like a horse's ass!

WWIB: nude (dresses) at the Emmys edition

Drew Barrymore and Cat Deeley both walked Sunday night's Emmy Awards red carpet in nude toned dresses of different styles.

While Barrymore's strapless Monique Lhuillier is certainly an improvement from the mess she wore to Whip It's TIFF premiere, I'm not completely in love with it. I feel like it washes her out too much, and the design itself is a little too bland. Standard award show fare.

Deeley can do no wrong (ever!) in her layered, off-the-shoulder Alberta Ferretti frock . . . although if we're being honest, I would've appreciated a little more effort in the hair department.

What do you think?

How do we feel about . . .

Mila Kunis' Emmy dress?

I'm feeling that something's just a little bit off with the Monique Lhuillier design. Namely, the length of it.

Kind of looks like it would better fit a child, the way it stops above the ankles and awkwardly exposes lovely Mila's pumps.

If they cut a foot off the bottom, though, I think it could be a real winner.

This shit ain't right

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is working to have Estelle Getty's 1988 Outstanding Supporting Actress Emmy Award taken off eBay.

Received for her work on Golden Girls, the trophy was put up on the online auction site last week with an initial price tag of $15,000. No bids have currently been placed, but let me say stevenskf, shame on you for trying to profit off a recently deceased TV legend in such a classless way.

The Academy has stated that when individuals or their heirs don't want the Emmy statue anymore, it becomes property of the Academy and must be returned.

Gossip Girl line of the week

"I don't need these losers to like me in order to follow me. Fear works better anyway." -- Blair Waldorf, on her fellow college-goers.

Words to live by!

Summer fun list: and the rest of it!

So summer is officially over. Fuck.

For the loyal reader, here we go recapping the few outstanding items on my summer fun list of 2009. Thanks to all who made it oh so possible!

#2, wear shorts 4+ times
I used to have a strict no shorts rule, even in the summer. I thought they gave off a nasty impression that I enjoyed physical activity of some sort.

Thankfully, since then I've realized you can wear shorts and still project the impression of a lazy mofo. So let's break down my calf-baring history over the summer:

(1) dressing up like a white water rafting Aladdin in July.
(2) getting my fatass stuck in a children's slide, the day after white water rafting.
(3) frisbee-ing on Toronto Island, August long weekend.
(4) dance party at the Beaches, Labour Day weekend

Not pictured: late-night swim at Kelly's cottage in May; sweating it out in my apartment for the 3.5 humid days of summer.

#13, read a magazine
Last year I had "read a book or magazine" on the summer fun list. This year I decided to be much more realistic, and just stick with the magazine. Elle, Details, Us Weekly, GQ. That's one mission easily accomplished.

#22, watch SYTYCD
I can't believe with the amount of time I spent watching SYTYCD this summer I forgot to get a photo of myself on the couch, spending quality time with Cat Deeley. Hopefully all of this is enough to prove I accomplished this task, however.

Summer fun failures

In my defense, I can't be blamed for the fact that the sun didn't come out this summer, preventing my from getting a good -- no great! -- farmer's tan (#30 on the list). I did the best I could!

I can be blamed, however, for not making time for such culturally-enriching tasks as #4, Bata Shoe Museum and #9, AGO. I pass that damn shoe museum at least once a day, and one of these days, I swear I'm actually going to go in!

Meanwhile, I'm in the process of completing #15, my NYC photo collage. But you can't rush art. So, I'll post again when this project reaches completion.

Summer fun list: let's end this on a high note

#16, strengthen friendships (new and old)
#21, have fun

One and the same!

Love you bitches.

(Can I get away with that? Probably not).

Fucked Up wins Polaris Music Prize

Toronto punk band Fucked Up walked away the winner of the Polaris Music Prize last night, for the album the Chemistry of Common Life.

The Polaris Prize is voted on by a jury of music journalists and industry types, and honours the best Canadian album of the year based on artistic merit.

The event, which took place at Toronto's Masonic Temple, saw performances from nominees including Metric, Hey Rosetta, Chad VanGaalen, Patrick Watson and K'Naan.

As winner of the fourth Polaris Prize, Fucked Up received a cheque for $20,000.

Aliya Jasmine Sovani has boobs

Man, Aliya Jasmine Sovani must've been pretty upset when she wasn't cast in Jimmy Brooks' Best I Ever Had music video.

But the MTV Canada host sure is having the last laugh, showing off her hot bod in this new ad promoting boobs.

Wait, what's that you say? This is actually promoting some sort of breast cancer cause?

Well shit, that's actually an important issue!

Good for Aliya Jasmine for supporting such a cause, while putting forth an unofficial bid for next Maxim cover girl.

Well said, Tina Fey

"Thank you for keeping us on the air, even though we are so much more expensive than a talk show." -- Tina Fey, accepting 30 Rock's Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy.

Take that, NBC and Jay Leno!

Monday deliciousness

Remember when Jennifer Lopez used to be a big deal?

I'm pretty glad she's not anymore.

But one of the things she's still got going for her is that she gets to costar with hot guys in generally mediocre films.

Just take a look at Alex O'Loughlin, above, in stills from the Back-Up Plan!

The film, a romantic comedy of course, is to be released in January 2010. And based on these photos, it looks like the movie's got at least one scene worthy of my time!

Happy Monday!

Summer fun list #31, go white water rafting; don't die

It was a rainy Saturday in July that Jackie, Renee, Kristen, Curtis, Conor and I ventured to go rafting down the Ottawa River.

By the time we got to our boat the sun was shining and things were looking up! Confident in our incredible collective athletic ability, it was clear from the get go everything would go super smoothly . . .

On our bus ride over to the starting point, they told us to look excited for the camera. This is me laughing as I tell Jackie I don't really do excited, I prefer to just let things happen around me.

This is us heading for our first rapid. A little nervous, but surely nothing bad would happen on our first rapid.

singing "row, row, row your boat."

Even though the six people ahead of me were submerged under the water, I held a smile on my face, stupidly thinking I was invincible.

Dominoes!

"Hey, I think we might recover from this!"

"Oh shit no, this is happening!'

and away we go.

It felt like we were under the water for minutes. Watching back the video, it was more like .25 seconds.

We promised each other that if we were thrown into the water, we'd start singing the Kelly Clarkson hit My Life Would Suck Without You. because when you fear you might die, it's nice to know someone will miss you

I stopped singing for a moment to roll my eyes at the girl who was shocked that her glasses were lost in the fall.

And here would be the proof that we didn't die!
