2010 in review: top songs (1 - 10)

"There's love, there's hope for us and there's beauty in the world."

Here they are, my friends!

My top 10 songs of 2010.

I played them on repeat, sang them in the shower, and danced to them non-stop.

And still I'm not sick of 'em!

Each of these songs reminds me of a particular event, person or moment in time of significance in 2010.

And as they inevitably continue to populate my iPod playlists, they'll still remind me of the great year that's now gone by.

Shake your booties boys and girls for the beauty in the world.

Happy 2011!

2010 in review: Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3 is the best movie I've ever seen.

I saw it in the theatre in the summer, and watched it again on DVD with my parents this week. And still, I can't rave enough about it.

The movie takes place as 17-year-old Andy is preparing to go off to college, leaving all his beloved toys except Woody behind in the attic. After a series of unfortunate events leaves the toys feeling shafted, they end up in a local daycare, which initially excites them as they will be played with again!

But when they discover the corruption of Lotso Hugging Bear, the leader of the toys in the daycare, Woody must help Buzz, Slinky, Potato Head and the rest of the gang make their escape.

This movie has everything you could ever ask for: comedy, action, drama, suspense. In the theatre I gasped out loud multiple times, and even watching it again at home I found myself exclaiming "Oh no!" during the suspenseful bits.

The characters are every bit as animated, lovable, hilarious and flawed as in the first two installments, and are of course the strength of the movie. You feel for them and want Andy to care about them as he once did, and you certainly don't want to see them suffer at the hands of the careless daycare children.

The animation itself is impeccable, and I am constantly impressed at Pixar's attention to detail, which makes you forget you're watching an animated movie despite the incredible happenings onscreen.

But more so than previous installments, I found Toy Story 3 carried throughout an emotional message about growing older and feelings of abandonment. As Andy grows up, the toys question whether they should stay loyal to their friend or seek love from other children.

It was enough to make me to dig my teddy bear Domino out of my closet and give him a place of prominence back on my bed.

2010 in review: top songs (11 - 20)

The soundtrack of my life is filled with pop hooks, dance beats, songs from Broadway and the occasional hip hop or rock track for good measure.

Here's part one of my top 20 tracks I listened to on repeat over 2010.

(Obviously personal favourites, and not necessary released in 2010).

11. Naked Eye, Kelly Clarkson
A leaked track that may or may not appear on Kelly's new CD expected in 2011. If this is what the whole album is going to sound like it can't be released soon enough. So deliciously poppy as Kelly does so well.

12. Lisztomania, Phoenix
This song was definitely released in 2009, but I listened to it a heck of a lot in 2010.

13. Defying Gravity, Original Broadway Cast of Wicked
Hoooow had it taken me so long to see Wicked?! In 2010, I finally saw the musical masterpiece, and adopted Defying Gravity as a new anthem.

On the cover: Natalie Portman, James Franco for Entertainment Weekly

Natalie Portman and James Franco get Oscar-ready on their own covers of Entertainment Weekly.

Portman's expecting to get an acting nomination for her role in Black Swan, while Franco is set to host the show and be nominated for 127 Hours.

“There were some nights that I thought I literally was going to die,” Portman says of her Black Swan role. “It was the first time I understood how you could get so wrapped up in a role that it could sort of take you down.”

Portman has had quite the holiday season -- the 29-year-old actress just announced that she's pregnant and engaged to marry Black Swan choreographer Benjamin Millepied.

An Oscar nod come January 25 will be yet another delightful milestone for her!

In the meantime, these Entertainment Weekly covers are pretty cute.

2010 in review: top TV

As much as I love TV, it pains me to say that as we prepare to ring in 2011, I count only two series as appointment television: Gossip Girl and Brothers & Sisters.

The former has improved drastically since last season, while the latter has taken a complete nosedive, abandoning any storylines that had momentum.

I did just buy my parents the first season of Modern Family on DVD, which we're collectively killing by watching six episodes at a time.

But truth is, these days I spend more time watching Golden Girls and Friends reruns than first-run TV.

There were a few bright spots on the TV dial, however.

2010 in review: Guest blogs

Some of the best times I had reading my blog this year was when others stepped up and took the reigns to contribute their own take on celebrity and pop culture.

During my two-week trip to Europe, Jackie and Vanessa really helped fill the void, while others contributed posts throughout the year.

Together we started a substantial relationship rumour about Kelly Cutrone and Jian Ghomeshi, embraced the Backstreet Boys back into our lives, and questioned what kind of itch Blair Waldorf was dealing with.

I literally LOL'd reading this year's guest blogs -- y'all are so funny!

Click inside to remember some of the best, and thanks to everyone who contributed!

2010 in review: Sightings!

Recognize any of the people in the above collage?

If not, you should be ashamed of yourself because someone did!

I didn't realize how many truly exciting celebrity sightings y'all had sent me over the past year, until I hit up my archive and checked.

From a food court encounter with a Canadian comedian, to an almost-sighting of a Twilight star you really impressed me with your eagle eyes and super-sleuthing talents.

Here's eight of the year's best celebrity encounters on outisthrough.com!

DJ Earworm: United State of Pop 2010

With only a few days left of 2010, DJ Earworm has released his annual United State of Pop remix.

The mashup consists of the top 25 songs of 2010, as per Billboard.

That includes Taio Cruz's Dynamite, Katy Perry's California Gurls, Usher's OMG and Lady Gaga's Bad Romance.

It's not quite as catchy as last year's remix, but it's still craftily put together.

Click inside for the full list of songs used in the mashup, and check back later this week for my own personal favourite songs of 2010!

2010 in review: On the cover

Abs were flaunted, blood was splattered, gowns were modeled and fierce poses were stricken to be featured in my "On the cover" feature over the past year.

These are the ten magazine covers that were so eye-grabbing I almost even purchased print copies.

1. True Blood cast for Rolling Stone
"Holy mother of fuck. True Blood stars Alexander Skarsgard, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer take it aaaaalll off for the cover of Rolling Stone's September 2, 2010 issue. They also appear to have splish-splashed in some blood before the shoot."

2. Anne Hathaway for Vogue
"Howard Jamieson soured me against Hathaway long ago, with her distaste for the actress. But there's no denying Hathaway looks gorgeous on this cover. She actually reminds me of Belle from Beauty and the Beast (and I love love love that movie)."

2010 in review: The look

As always, life was a runway for the biggest stars hitting red carpets in Hollywood, New York and beyond in 2010.

The greatest head-turners had a little fun with their looks, and their comfort in their ensembles showed.

Click inside to ch-check out my best dressed from the Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys, Grammys and more.

We're talking designs by Jason Wu, Carolina Herrarra, Christian Sirano, Roberto Cavalli, and Armani.

We've also got a star in a thrift-store find, and another in an ensemble that Jackie commented is "batshit f'ing insane."

Which look's your favourite?

Alanis Morissette's a mom!

Alanis Morissette received perhaps the best gift she could ask for on Christmas day: the birth of her son!

"Alanis Morissette and Mario 'Souleye' Treadway welcomed a baby boy, Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway, on Dec. 25th," says a rep for the new mom. "All are healthy and happy."

Congratulations to the happy parents, who married earlier this year.

And thank you for choosing a name that is unique, without being a fruit or other inanimate object.

Q&A: Jessi Cruickshank talks Real Hollywood Survival Guide

She may have left MTV Canada earlier this year for a new project in L.A., but Jessi Cruickshank assures me she hasn't taken to the Hollywood antics she poked fun of as host of the After Show.

“I wish I could hop in daddy’s Beemer every morning and just go for coffee with my friends and make a living clubbing, but that whole lifestyle is something I don’t think I will ever experience," she says. "I’m still trying to get in a meagre catfight with someone in a bar though. I think that would be good press for me.”

Her signature sense of humour in fine form, Cruickshank returns to MTV Canada today with a three-part series of specials documenting the surreal Hollywood life around her.

I spoke with Jessi last week to get the scoop on her Real Hollywood Survival Guide, and took the opportunity to do some quality celeb gossiping with someone I knew would share my enthusiasm for it.

2010 in review: Kellan Lutz

What a year it's been for me and Kellan Lutz!

Just when I thought I couldn't possibly lust any more for the Twilight hunk, there he'd pop up in his underwear once again.

Lutz was featured in a record-breaking six Monday deliciousness posts over the past year, and seven additional posts highlighting his greatest (physical) assets.

As the face, er, body of Calvin Klein X underwear, and one of People's Sexiest Men Alive, surely I wasn't the only one to take note!

Click inside to join me on the remarkable journey of Kellan Lutz's hot bod on outisthrough.com throughout 2010.

Congrats to Kellan Lutz on being my most objectified celebrity of the year!

2010 in review: Monday deliciousness

Oh what a delicious year its been!

So many fine men flaunted what they've got that I had to expand my regular Monday deliciousness feature beyond just Monday.

From Mad Men to vampires, wilderness adventurers and Glee coaches, we were treated to more than an eyeful to drool over.

Click on inside for eight of the hottest posts featured on outisthrough.com this year!

Needless to say, you won't regret it.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, loyal readers!

To celebrate, push play and enjoy a festive song from Big Mouth Billy Bass, another family heirloom.

One day this thing will make huge money on Antiques Roadshow. (Okay, maybe not).

Hope Santa was kind to you and that you need to unbuckle your belt a notch or two after some good ol' fashion holiday overeating!

Enjoy your time with family and friends, and be sure to check back next week for the Best Of 2010 posts, and a brand new interview with Jessi Cruickshank!

This couple knows Christmas spirit

Oh my goodness, I love this story so much.

A couple in Chelsea, NY received hundreds of letters to Santa Claus addressed to their apartment this year.

They don't know why they were addressed to them, but took it upon themselves to fulfill as many as possible.

How lucky for those children that their letters made it to such kind generous people!

This video brings such warm fuzzy Christmas feelings that even I can't corrupt with a sarcastic zinger.

Press play and enjoy.

Guess Who: Frosty's friend turned Mad Men star

Recently my internet wasn't working for an entire weekend, and I literally ran out of productive things to do without it, and turned to my Christmas-specials-on-DVD to entertain me.

(I would've listened to music on my gramophone, but I live in the year 2010).

I watched the classic Frosty the Snowman, followed by the inferior 1992 followup Frosty Returns.

Frosty Returns takes place in a town whose people are trying to get rid off all the snow, much to the disappointment and fear of Frosty and his new friend Holly. Take a look, above.

Anyway, my biggest takeaway from this recent viewing is that the voice of Holly went on to become one of the stars of the hugely successful Mad Men.

Think you can guess who it was?

Rosie's OWN show: "Exciting, scary -- and right"

Come September, Rosie O'Donnell will be back on daytime with a new talk show on Oprah's OWN network, which the former Queen of Nice says she finds "exciting, scary -- and right."

"I feel like everything's sort of aligned now," the former View cohost says. "I've been offered other shows over the years, but it never felt like the right time. There was something about getting to do it for OWN, with Oprah's sensibility, her touch, her world presence—what she stands for and who she is—that felt like a gift."

The show, Rosie says, won't be as celebrity-focused as her past ventures. It will focus on a single top for an hour and talk about real people and real issues -- happy stuff too, of course.

The mother of four says it will be an adjustment for her and her family to get back to the daily grind.

"I've been off TV for so long that sometimes my kids forget I'm famous," she says. "We'll go out and they'll be like, 'Why does everyone talk to you?' and I'll say, 'Before you were born, I had a TV show.' When you're at home being a mom, you're isolated. To go back to having a staff and working relationships—you have to open yourself up again. I had a plan until I was 40: Be as successful as possible and then retire. My mom died at 39, so I never thought beyond that. It didn't occur to me that my life would have a part two."

For more on how Rosie's life has changed since her super successful Rosie O'Donnell Show, ch-check out this feature on Oprah's website.

See you in September, Ro!

200 Christmases from the 90210 cast

In case you've forgotten what holiday is coming up in a mere two sleeps, just push play to get a couple hundred reminders courtesy of a classic episode of Beverly Hills 90210.

I don't know who has time to put these types of videos together, but I'm sure glad they do!

Ben Mulroney: fashion designer?

Okay, fashion designer may be an overstatement.

But everyone's favourite Prime Ministerial-offspring-turned-entertainment host is lending his name to a line of pocket squares.

Yup, that's right. Mr. eTalk is developing a line of pocket squares called HNK with Canadian tie-makers Braemore Neckwear.

"Men don’t have a lot of wiggle room with their wardrobes. Suits and tuxedos are primarily variations on a common theme and yet most men don’t take advantage of the best way to distinguish themselves: a breast pocket square,” Mulroney says via press release.

I will admit I appreciate the added touch of a pocket square to a man's look.

But will I be running out to get a Mulroney-approved square of fabric? Not bloody likely.

If you'd like to get your hands on one, HNK is available at Holt Renfrew, Simons, Selfridges, Got Style, Ted’s Style Shoppe, Launch Menswear in Abbotsford, BC and Supreme Menswear in Calgary.

Sighting!

Yesterday morning Jackie read a tweet that revealed the Toronto Maple Leafs would be practicing at Trinity-Bellwoods Park.

We're both huge hockey fans, so we didn't need anymore information. We mobilized.

"I don't even know any players by name," I said on the way.

"All I know is Phaneuf," Jackie responded.

We arrived to discover the Leafs were on hand to help christen a new outdoor ice rink at the park.

Then we stood among the crowd, and watched as the Leafs practiced.

This involved skating around the ice, passing and subsequently shooting the puck.

At one point Phaneuf was mere feet away. We knew this, because his back was to us, and his name was on the back of his jersey.

It was, in a word, thrilling.

Toronto's new mayor Rob Ford was on-hand to speak, and upon his introduction a group of 10-year-olds booed.

"I can't stand that guy," one of them said upon completion of his speech.

"I love that kid," I responded.

It was hard to tear ourselves away from the rink while the Leafs were still playing, but both Jackie and I had Christmas shopping to complete.

"Hopefully my brother can identify some of the players in these shots," I said.

Can any of you help?!

Jason Segel: Muppet tears

“I’ve been writing this for three years now, and when we did our first table reading they brought the actual puppets, and they brought out Kermit and they had to stop because I started crying hysterically. It was so beautiful! All he said was, ‘Hi ho!’ I just turned around and he goes, ‘Hi ho!’ and I looked at him and was like, ‘We gotta stop!’ I was freaking out.

"It's the same way when they bring kids to set, something really magical happens. A puppeteer is standing right here with a puppet there, and the kid is looking directly at the puppet. They don't even notice the puppeteer, they phase them out somehow. And every time I see that I think that's why I'm doing this movie."

Merry Christmas from Manny Santos and Jay Hogart

Degrassi's Manny Santos and Jay Hogart got together recently to sing a festive little ditty, which they've posted on YouTube.

Push play to watch as the duo (real names Cassie Steele and Mike Lobel) test how quickly they can perform Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree.

Cassie also seems to be having some sort of over-emoting competition with herself.

On the plus side, her hair and makeup look real nice.

And Mike. Well. Yeah, I would.

On the cover: Ryan Gosling for GQ

Ryan Gosling brings his damn fine self to the January 2011 cover of GQ Magazine.

The 30-year-old Canadian actor channels Cary Grant and Marlon Brando in the photo shoot by Mario Testino.

“Look, this is crazy. I don’t understand how I’m here, living this life, wearing this suit. I assume I’m going to pay for it someday," Gosling says of his movie star life.

He knows not to take advantage of it, though. The problem with Hollywood, he tells the magazine, is that nobody works. That drove him to get a "real job" at a sandwich shop after the Notebook.

“[People in Hollywood] have meals. They go to Pilates. But it’s not enough. So they do drugs," he says. "If everybody had a pile of rocks in their backyard and spent every day moving them from one side of the yard to the other, it would be a much happier place.”

New Kelly Clarkson: You Still Won't Know What It's Like

Kelly Clarkson performed a new song from her upcoming album at a benefit for Houses of Hope orphanages last week in Nashville, TN.

Kelly said she just wrote the song, You Still Won't Know What It's Like, and thus needed the lyrics in front of her when performing.

According to fans at the show, her new album is complete, but she doesn't know when it will be released because the head of her label is leaving.

C'mon RCA, the sooner the better for this release!

What do we think of this new song? I like!

[side note: I'm also loving Kelly's longer, wavy hair].

Michelle's friend Denise is married

Here's another sign we're getting old, friends.

Michelle Tanner's friend Denise is married!

And we're not even talking a pretend wedding, like when Harry pretend married Stephanie, or when Steve pretend married Michelle. No no. This is the real deal.

You may remember Denise as Michelle's "new" best friend, after Teddy moved to Texas. They bonded over their love of sour cream 'n onion potato chips.

Also, Denise's uncle is Little Richard, who performed at a rally at the Smash Club when Joey was trying to become president of the PTA.

Anyway, in real life Denise goes by Jurnee Smollett, and also appears on the television series Friday Night Lights.

She's now 24-years-old, and on October 24 married a musician by the name of Josiah Bell, People reports.

"It was such a fun process," the actress says of planning her nuptials. "We didn't hire a wedding planner. Josiah and I literally decided every detail together."

"It's incredible. My best friend is my life partner. It doesn't get any better than that."

In other news, 25-year-old Zac Hanson just had his second child, while I've been sitting here trying to decide if I should let Zac Efron or Ryan Reynolds have me first.

For the love of christ.

Monday Deliciousness: Brian Austin Green

Brian Austin Green was photographed looking for love on the beaches of Hawaii over the weekend, looking smokin' fine in the process.

Actually, scratch that. He's already found love -- his wife Megan Fox was right by his side, I just cropped her out of the photos.

Who'd have thunk that after all these years, geeky David Silver would be such a stone cold fox, married to a stone cold Fox?!

I mean, I still hate that tattoo on his chest, but otherwise I so would.

As of late, Green has been seen pleasuring Marcia Cross' character on Desperate Housewives. Lucky bitch.

Happy Monday!

The Look: Christina Ricci in Zac Posen

Christina Ricci looked just to die at last week's New York Stage And Film Winter Gala in New York City.

The 30-year-old star of Casper and Now & Then donned an ombre and mesh Zac Posen dress paired with Yves Saint Laurent patent leather pumps, and a black clutch.

There was some debate in the blogosphere about whether this look was hot or not, which I just don't get. Everything about it works for me.

The sexy silhouette, two-toned gradient, makeup, and fierce bangs are perfection.

Werk!

SNL Digital Short: I Just Had Sex

Lonely Island just had sex with Gossip Girl's Blake Lively and mediocre movies' Jessica Alba, in last night's SNL Digital Short.

Helped out by Akon, Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone belt out all the literal details of their sexual adventures.

Sample lyric: “I just had sex and it felt so good. A woman let me put my penis inside of her.”

Catchy, hullarious, and accurate with regards to what is involved in sex.

Surely a new anthem for lovers everywhere.

Being Erica to be remade for American TV

ABC is developing an American version of CBC's Being Erica with Toronto's Temple Street Productions, which originated the series.

Maggie Friedman -- who's written for Eastwick, Once & Again and Dawson's Creek -- will write and executive produce the U.S. version.

The decision to remake the series is slightly strange, as Being Erica already has a following in the States on ABC's SoapNet.

When I spoke with star Erin Karpluk in the spring, she told me why she thinks the series caught on with American fans.

"The one feedback that I continue to get from people is that, regardless of where you're at in your life -- if you’re male or your female, if you’re older or your younger – everyone relates to the idea of having regrets," she said. "Because we all have them. So there’s maybe something identifiable to Erica’s journey that other people can relate to."

Now Karpluk says she wishes the American version well, and even has a few ideas of how it could be changed up.

"I would be really excited to see how somebody else would do an interpretation of this story," she says. "In the back of my head, I've always thought if anyone was to redo this show, I'd like to see how it would change if it was a man."

In Canada, Being Erica just wrapped its third season, with a decision on season four not expected until the new year.

And though she wouldn't rule out the possibility, Karpluk isn't sure she'd be down to star in the American version.

"It would be entirely dependent on the network," she says. "But I'm very fond of the show that we created ... I don't know if that would be strange or not."

On the cover: Emma Stone, Garrett Hedlund for W

Emma Stone and Garrett Hedlund are featured on their own W Magazine covers for January 2011.

Stone, who just received her first Golden Globe nomination at 22 for Easy A, tells the mag it took a while for producers to recognize her comedic abilities.

"I don’t think people thought comedy was my M.O., and it was," she says. "They always cast me as 'the girlfriend' or 'the young girl with attitude.' I would lose my mind if I felt like I had to be something like 'the pretty girl.'"

Hedlund, meanwhile, is now starring in Tron: Legacy, though he tells the mag it took a while to get from his farm in Minnesota to Hollywood.

"Growing up, I would watch a movie on video and would go to the back of the VHS and locate the address for Universal Pictures or MGM or whatever. I’d write to the studios asking them if I could be in a movie. They never wrote me back," he says. "When I was 14, I moved to Arizona to live with my mother . . . For two or three years, I flew to L.A. for auditions . . . I remember the reaction to my first audition: I think the phrase was 'You sucked pond water.'"

Michelle Williams: Dawson's Creek mobster

"I said to a friend [that] being on 'Dawson's Creek' was kind of like being a mobster. You set up a shop selling pizza but in the back you're laundering money. You're doing one thing in plain sight and secretly plotting something else. I was plotting my tastes, my interests, my beliefs and hopes for what I could be.

"It was never an option to me to make a lot of money or do work I couldn't get behind. That's not my nature. What is hard is living up to your own expectations. Yes, it was hard getting jobs I wanted. I was a pop tart. It took patience and baby steps. I did a play in New York that wasn't about being blonde, which led to a role in an HBO thing to a role in a British drama. As F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "Gradually, then suddenly."

-- Michelle Williams on developing her career post-Dawson's Creek

Dan Levy: Lonely Christmas music video

Dan Levy's MTV Christmas special Holido's and Dont's premiered earlier this week, culminating with the above music video for his original tune Lonely Christmas.

Danny boy enlisted the help of fellow MTV host Nicole Holness, and a few So You Think You Can Dance Canada dancers to bob their heads in the background of the clip.

Levy's singing voice, meanwhile, has a distinct Muppet-like quality to it. Am I right or am I right?

Also, the lyrics rhyme.

If you like what you see, MTV Canada will surely be rerunning the shit out of Dan's special over the next week or two.

On the cover: Amy Adams for Marie Claire

Amy Adams looks just plain gorgeous on the January 2011 cover of Marie Claire Magazine.

The red hair! Those piercing eyes! That ample cleavage!

The 36-year-old actress was just nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the Fighter.

"What’s funny is that some people who’ve seen it have said, ‘Amy, you’re finally playing yourself!’" she tells the mag about the not-that-innocent role. "It’s not that she’s like me. It’s just that she’s less naive.”

Amy goes on to say she hopes she can continue to play complex real characters like those in the Fighter and On the Road.

“I’ve never really been too concerned with how I’ve looked on-screen," she says. "And I’ve never really played a stylish, modern, glamourous girl. But with these last two movies I’ve done, I was raw. I hope that’s the journey I’m on. It just feels more honest.”

Nelly Furtado's greatest hits in four minutes!

Ch-check out DJ Earworm's brilliant mash-up of Nelly Furtado's greatest hits, above.

He's covered all Nelly's bases, from her first hit I'm Like A Bird to the sexy Promiscuous, and her latest single Night Is Young.

If you'd care to hear anything included in full-length, Nelly's greatest hits album is in stores now.

Sexiest man alive now a bachelor!

People's sexiest man alive and GQ's babe of the year have called it quits.

Yes, that's right. The two-year marriage of Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson is no more.

"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage," they said in a joint statement yesterday. "We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

The news came one day after it was revealed Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens had broken up. The thought of all these sexy eligible bachelors is making the holiday season even brighter!

Now we knew all along Scarjo was a rebound for Ryan, after his engagement to the divine Alanis Morissette fell apart.

Things likely started to deteriorate when Scarjo released that ill-conceived music album of hers, at the same time as Morissette's far-superior Flavours of Entanglement.

Boardwalk Empire, the Big C breakthrough Golden Globe noms

There weren't many surprises when the Golden Globe television nominees were announced this morning. In fact, they looked much like the nominees for September's Emmy Awards.

HBO's Boardwalk Empire seems to have made the biggest new impact, with nominations for best drama series, and acting honours for Steve Buscemi and Kelly MacDonald.

The Walking Dead also grabbed its first best drama series nod.

And the Golden Globes succeeds where the Emmys didn't, nominating Katey Sagal for best drama actress for Sons of Anarchy.

In the comedy arena, Showtime's The Big C broke through with nominations for best comedy series, and best actress for Laura Linney.

The Big Bang Theory, meanwhile, gets its first best comedy series nod, along with a best actor nomination for Emmy winner Jim Parsons.

But other than that, it's kind of same old.

Glee's nominated for five awards, including best comedy series, and acting nods for Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Lea Michele and Chris Colfer.

Modern Family's also got a best comedy series nod, and acting nominations for Sofia Vergara and Emmy winner Eric Stonestreet.

Meanwhile, Mad Men's up for best drama series, as well as acting honours for Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss.

Used to seeing 30 Rock, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell, Dexter, Michael C. Hall, Hugh Laurie, Edie Falco, Toni Collette and Brian Cranston on the ballot?

Well you're going to see them again, as they're all nominated for Globes.

Not to say they don't deserve it, but if we take these nominees as an indication, TV hasn't given us anything new to be excited about.

And the Golden Globes has a reputation for being slightly edgier and younger with its TV categories. Keri Russell won for her first season of Felicity back in the day. And last year True Blood's Anna Paquin took the prize. This year, not so much.

Click inside for a full list of TV Golden Globe nominees.

Golden Globes: Jennifer Love Hewitt vs. Dame Judi Dench

One of the most mind-boggling Golden Globe nominations revealed today is that of Jennifer Love Hewitt in the category of best actress in a miniseries or made-for-TV movie.

Jenny Love is nominated for her role in the Lifetime movie the Client List, in which she plays a woman who gets a job at a massage studio, only to find out the other staff memebers are -- get this! -- prostitutes. GASP! And when the police raid the business, her character ends up as a key witness, putting the city's high-profile johns in handcuffs.

An appropriate Sunday afternoon movie if nothing else is on? Sure.

But Golden Globe-worthy performance? Doubtful. And yeah, that's an actual promo still from the movie, above.

The hullarious thing is that J.Lo Hewitt is nominated alongside some heavy competition -- namely Dame Judi Dench in Return to Crawford, and Claire Danes, who picked up the Emmy in September for her role in Temple Grandin.

Hayley Atwell (Pillars of the Earth) and Romola Garai (Emma) round out the category.

Kudos to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for a truly bizarre nomination, and congrats to Jennifer Love Hewitt in any event.

I do hope she plans on vajazzling for the big event. I'm sure we'll hear about it, whether we want to or not.

Tuesday Deliciousness: Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling sure is showing off a lot of his good things in his new film All Good Things.

The actor strips down to his tighty whities and takes a dip in one scene, and boy am I glad he does!

Based on the true story of convicted killer Robert Durst, Gosling stars as a real estate heir whose wife (Kirsten Dunst) mysteriously disappears.

The movie's in theatres now, if you want to get a big-screen look at what Gosling's offering -- and why wouldn't you?!

Happy Tuesday!

Hot young Hollywood nominated for Golden Globes

The nominees for the 2011 Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning, peppered with the names of Hollywood's hot young thangs.

Did Meryl Streep not make a movie this year?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association splits its film categories into comedy and drama, opening up the field for greater variety of honourees.

Best actor (drama) pits Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) up against James Franco (127 Hours) and Jesse Eisenberg (the Social Network). Colin Firth (The King's Speech) and Mark Wahlberg (the Fighter) round out the category.

Best actress (drama) sees Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) competing with Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) for the gold. Other nominees are Halle Berry (Frankie and Alice) and Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole).

Getting naked paid off for Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, who are nominated for comedy actor and actress, respectively, for Love and Other Drugs.

And cheers to Emma Stone, who earned a comedy actress nomination for Easy A.

Elsewhere, Mila Kunis is up for best supporting actress for Black Swan.

And Andrew Garfield picked up a well-deserved nod for the Social Network (over equally-deserving Armie Hammer, and not-nearly-as-deserving Justin Timberlake).

Click inside for the full list of 2011 Golden Globe film nominees. The awards will be handed out January 16.

Nominated for best picture (drama) are Black Swan, the Fighter, Inception, The King’s Speech and the Social Network, which have all been long-buzzed about.

The best picture (comedy) category is a bizarre selection, perhaps indicating a ho-hum year for laughers. Nominees are Alice in Wonderland, Burlesque, The Kids are All Right, Red and the Tourist.

Priscilla: Queen of the Spectacle

A couple weeks ago my mom, grandma and aunt went to see the musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre. They were seated in the second row.

“I don’t think I’d ever seen a six pack before,” my mom later told me. “But I definitely have now.”

Due to my own lack of research, I had few other expectations as I settled into my seat at the Princess of Wales a week later to enjoy Priscilla for myself.

What followed was two and a half hours of delightfully costumed drag queens performing deliciously great pop songs, with a timid attempt to tell a story between song and dance numbers.

Based on the movie of the same name, the show sees three drag queens on a pilgrimage from Sydney to Alice Springs, Australia with their individual aspirations revealed along the way. Their mode of transportation is a festively vibrant bus they name Priscilla.

Tick/Mitzi instigates the road trip in order to meet his six-year-old son for the first time. Adam/Felicia is a hot young thang who goes along for the ride, planning to sing every Madonna song from the peaks of Alice Springs upon arrival. And Bernadette is a post-op drag veteran who wonders if the time has passed to find the man of her dreams.

While there are intermittent moments of sombre self-reflection, story isn’t so much the focus here. The strength of the show is in the spectacle – it largely feels like the best damn pride parade ever.

The costumes are elaborate and outstanding – from a chorus of cupcakes to non-stop sequins and platform shoes (not to mention pleasantly revealing short shorts). And there couldn’t be a gayer selection of music for our protagonists to perform, from Tina Turner to Madonna to Cyndi Lauper. Needless to say, a smile rarely left my face.

With much of the action taking place in and around Priscilla, the bus itself sometimes feels a little limiting as a set piece. I wanted a little bit more from the simple backdrop, when the stage wasn't filled with costumed queens.

The almost non-stop energy of the production was nicely offset by glimpses of humanity among its well-cast characters.

Tony Sheldon effectively portrays Bernadette as a woman balancing self-reverence and later-life regret. And Will Swenson plays perhaps as much of a “straight man” as possible among the trio, as a dad afraid to scare his son by revealing his occupation.

Nick Adams, meanwhile, is a delightful little firecracker as the youthful, energetic Adam/Felicia, whose wandering eye and penchant for adventure gets him into a little bit of trouble. (And it must be noted, even from the cheap seats his banging body could be fully appreciated).

At its core, Priscilla is a spirited celebration of love and life regardless of difference. Its talented cast, elaborate costumes and stellar soundtrack make it just downright fun.

The show’s only in town until January 2, when it leaves to take Broadway by storm. If you want to experience what New Yorkers will soon be raving about, best hop on the opportunity now!

MuchMusic orders drama from Degrassi creators

MuchMusic and CTV have ordered a new drama series from Epitome Pictures' Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn, the creators of Degrassi.

Highland Gardens is a six-episode one-hour drama that follows the ins and outs of an apartment-style motel in LA which draws aspiring Canadian hopefuls chasing their Hollywood dreams.

Wait. Is this a drama, or a reality show starring any past Degrassi star who isn't Drake, Shenae Grimes or Nina Dobrev?

Production is scheduled for summer 2011.

CTV, meanwhile, has ordered two new drama pilots: a Toronto-set medical drama called Saving Hope, and a legal drama about a stay-at-home mom turned lawyer called Stay With Me.

I didn't realize CTV was allowed to produce dramas that aren't cop shows a-la-Flashpoint.

Production on these two pilots is set for spring.

Leighton Meester: Gossip goner?

Leighton Meester's got two more seasons on her Gossip Girl contract, and after that she'll be hanging up Blair Waldorf's designer frocks for good.

Meester "obviously enjoys working on the show and living in New York," the actress told E!Online at a junket for her new movie Country Strong. But she's pleased producers have been flexible with the cast's schedules, to allow them to take on other projects.

"It allows you to be ready for when the show's over," she says.

As for whether the whole show would end when her contract's up, Meester isn't sure.

"But I think there's that old saying about wanting to go out on top," she says.

Well, I think we're a little late for that. But at least Gossip Girl has been significantly more entertaining this season than last.

Honestly, I think this show could xoxo into the sunset at any point now, without too many tears shed.

Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show will be called ...

. . . "Anderson."

The shocking revelation was made today.

Personally, I'd prefer something a little more casual. Like "The Andy Coop Show" or "Gabbing With Andy" or even "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper."

But hey, "Anderson" is pretty original too.

CNN's silver fox will launch his daytime talk show in fall 2011, and based on his guest-hosting gigs on Regis and Kelly in the past, I think he's got a good chance of succeeding.

"It's fun and interesting to work in daytime television," Anderson has said of his new project. "The format is unique and you can really go in-depth on a wide range of fascinating and compelling stories. With this new program I hope to relay important information and relate to people and the audience in a completely different way. It's an exciting opportunity to show another side of myself and create something worthwhile and special in daytime."

Or just talk about your favourite cheesy reality shows, celeb gossip, and keep being your cute damn self. That I would tune in for.

The Look: Rachel Bilson in Christian Dior

Eat your hearts out, video game geeks.

Rachel Bilson looked girl-next-door-gorgeous at Saturday night's Spike TV Video Game Awards in L.A.

The 29-year-old O.C. actress was perfectly pretty in a ruffled blue-grey Christian Dior dress, which she paired with nude Brian Atwood heels.

With her loose two-toned tresses and light makeup, Rachel makes beauty look effortless.

For an actress who doesn't seem to work all that much, Ms. Bilson sure knows how to impress on the red carpet time and time again.

It's a Christmas miracle!

Reports today that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens have broken up after three years together.

"It was mutual," an unnamed source tells Us Weekly of the High School Musical duo. "They have been together for so long. It just ran its course."

It's about damn time Zac traded up. How long have I been saying that he could do so much better?! A very long time.

Now only 12 more sleeps till I wake up to find out whether Mr. Efron's waiting under the Christmas tree for me.

Now that would be a true Christmas miracle.

Hey Girl, Ryan Gosling loves 'Fuck Yeah! Ryan Gosling'

Here's yet another reason to love Canadian dreamboat Ryan Gosling.

While promoting Blue Valentine in New York, MTV asked the actor if he's aware of this blog entitled Fuck Yeah! Ryan Gosling.

(If you're too lazy to click: the blog, which is as awesome as the title suggests, takes photos of Gosling and puts words in his mouth, always starting with 'Hey Girl.')

Not only is Gosling aware of the blog, he embraces it.

"They're hilarious . . . I write them actually. It's my site," he jokes.

Ch-check out the vid above in which Ryan reads a selection of posts from the blog.

Oh lord, he's so adorable when he laughs.

Also, watching Golden Girls with Ryan Gosling would just about make my life.

Paul Rudd promotes SNL hosting gig

Paul Rudd is hosting this weekend's episode of Saturday Night Live, and I'm already laughing just watching the promos, above.

(Okay the first few are stupid, but I actually can't stop laughing at/with the last one).

Rudd teams up with SNL cast member Andy Samberg for the spots, plugging his hosting duty, and Paul McCartney as musical guest.

Last time Rudd hosted SNL was hoyay-riffic, so I can't wait to see what he's got in store this time around.

Nelly Furtado on . . .

BREAKING INTO THE MUSIC BIZ:
“When we were going for a record deal, we went out to all these meetings and my photos were like photo strip photos from this photo booth at the strip mall that I had taken on my own time with clothes I wanted to wear. You have to brand your image and wear what you want to wear and feel how you want to feel because people are seeing you for the first time.”

MAKING IT:
“I think nowadays everybody feels like they can become a star just because they’re on YouTube, but that’s not the only part of the equation. There’s a lot of hard work that goes with it and if you don’t have the chops to back it up, it’s gonna be more challenging later on.”

JIMMY BROOKS:
“I really like Drake (and) he really represents for urban music in Canada. He still works with a lot of the same Canadian producers he’s always worked with and so I respect that a lot, ’cause I’m all about homegrown and just kind of trying to keep things organic and all that.”

Avril release date confirmed

Ohthankgoodness.

The return of Avril Lavigne has been confirmed, with a March 8 release date set for her new studio album Goodbye Lullaby.

It's the Canadian hoodie designer's first full-length album in three years.

If you just can't wait for Avril's special brand of emo pop, fear not.

She'll be performing her first single from the album What the Hell on New Year's Eve during Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve.

p.s. the first thing I thought when I saw Avril's above cover art was "Kelly Clarkson - My December." (But obviously Kelly's classier).

14 actors acting: Franco, Damon, Portman and more

James Franco makes out with James Franco in the above video shot for New York Times Magazine's website.

The publication worked with a number of performers who defined cinema in 2010 to capture classic screen types on film.

The vids were directed by Solve Sundsbo, with music by Toronto's own Owen Pallett.

Other actors who are part of the project include Matt Damon, Jesse Eisenberg, Natalie Portman, Michael Douglas, Tilda Swinton and Robert Duvall.

Click here for the full interactive feature -- it's worth it, trust!

(side note: I just want to put into the universe that I'm totally cool with aging, weight-gaining Matt Damon. My lust does not cease, and I'd still totally take him. Ify'knowhatimean).

Blue Valentine now rated R

Good news for Blue Valentine!

The MPAA has overturned its NC-17 rating for the Ryan Gosling-Michelle Williams drama, after Harvey Weinstein appealed the ruling.

The movie, which follows the disintegration of a young couple's marriage, will now be rated R.

Belief was the movie initially received the NC-17 rating due to a scene in which Gosling's character performs oral sex on Williams' character.

Weinstein must have made a strong case, as the MPAA's reversal of its rating was unanimous, and no cuts were made to the movie.

Along with the change in its rating, Blue Valentine is now described as having "strong graphic sexual content" as opposed to "explicit sexual content."

The R-rating will make theatres more receptive to showing it, and allow wider audiences to enjoy it.
