On the cover: Adele for Q

Adele takes the cover of the 300th issue of Q, for a story in which she describes her strategy for staying true to herself.

The 23-year-old British songstress says she refuses to license her songs for commercial advertisements and tries to avoid media overexposure.

She also says she refuses to headline festivals or play arenas.

"I will not do festivals. The thought of an audience that big frightens the life out of me. I don't think the music would work either. It's all too slow," she says. "We had three nights on hold at [British arena] The O2 and I was like 'I wont play a festival. You think I'm gonna play a fackin' arena? Are you out of your mind?'"

"I'd rather play 12 years at the Barfly [small venue for indie bands] than one night at The O2! So I've made all those decisions and some people are pretty mortified. They think I'm mad."

I totes love Adele for knowing who she is and refusing to compromise.

I do hope, however, she spends more than one night in Toronto on her next tour. Tickets to her show earlier this month sold out in a hot second, and it hurt my heart to watch video footage of the show afterward.

/A\ becomes CTV Two; Rogers launching CityNews Channel

It's Canadian upfronts week, which has television networks announcing their new schedules and media conglomerates revealing new plans for next year.

Among yesterday's announcements: CTV is rebranding its /A\ stations as CTV Two this fall, which will coincide with their conversion to HD.

“We are extending CTV, Canada’s strongest television brand, to our second network, so that these channels can resonate deeper with audiences, advertisers, and the communities they serve," Kevin Crull, president of Bell Media said via press release.

Meanwhile, Rogers announced the launch of CityNews Channel, a new 24-hour local news channel in Toronto, set to debut this fall.

"By incorporating our trailblazing and trusted news brands from CityNews, 680 News, and publishing - including Canada's most trusted news magazihne, Maclean's - CityNews Channel is poised to be the destination local news channel," Scott Moore, president of Rogers Broadcasting said in a statement.

Citytv was the first Canadian private broadcaster to roll out its new schedule yesterday. Largely saturated with American programming, it's planning to produce reality show Canada's Got Talent, part of an international franchise, for midseason.

Degrassi season 11: Shit keeps on getting real

Take a look at what's in store for season 11 of Degrassi with this just-released 'Now Or Never' promo of the cast at the beach.

Degrassi returns to MuchMusic in a daily format this summer, airing Monday - Thursday evenings beginning July 18.

And by the looks of this preview, shit's about to get real. I'm talking sparklers, twirling around, waving your sweater in the air, laughing, even holding hands.

Oh and this is Degrassi, so there's a guy with a gun.

The song in the promo is 'Steal Your Heart' by Augustana.

Doors Open Toronto: Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Centre

In addition to an Inside Out screening this weekend, I managed to squeeze in a visit to the Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Centre as part of Doors Open Toronto.

The hour-long visit to Canada's only double-decker live theatre venue, now almost 100 years old, proved educational and entertaining.

We started on the lower level, where a volunteer educated us on the history of the Elgin, from its beginnings, to its troubled fate as television overshadowed live theatre, and how a mid-80s production of Cats helped revive the venue.

Our speaker was very well-educated, and spoke to every detail of the venue -- from the carpet and seats to the lighting and moulding, and even the venue's washrooms.

Then it was upstairs to the Winter Garden Theatre, which a show of hands proved not many people in attendance had previously visited.

With a ceiling adorned with a combination of real and fake leaves, and painted murals on the walls, the theatre is designed to look and feel like a garden patio of sorts.

Our knowledgeable volunteer speaker taught us of the theatre's restoration and current uses, how all those leaves have been preserved and cleaned, and how the theatre is home to one of the largest collections of vaudeville set backgrounds.

Ample time was allowed before and after the speakers to explore the theatre and take photographs, which I enjoyed muchly.

Next year I'll mayhaps add Doors Open Toronto to my Summer Fun List and put a more extensive plan together to explore the city.

Sighting! (And Sighting! And Sighting! And Sighting!)

by Renee

Rather than heading to Montreal like Chris over the long weekend I packed my bags and drove towards the city lights. I stayed in Hoboken, NJ because I was in town for a family gathering but I was able to spend a whole day and one evening in the NYC. And OH what a time I had.

Some people go to the city expecting to see celebrities at every corner and are disappointed when they find out that spotting one isn't as easy as they thought...well I'm here to say that sometimes it is.

The first sighting was Stephen Baldwin on 46th. He was leaving his car at (what we call) the vending machine parking lot. I had to hold myself back from yelling "VIVA LOS BIO-DOME" because I figured he may not be impressed that mind automatically links him to Pauly Shore (confession: I love and quote Bio-Dome way too much).

Later that night after seeing Norbert Butz (The Good Wife) and Aaron Tveit (Gossip Girl) in Catch Me If You Can, Conor and I walked over to the stage door of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying to see the pandemonium surrounding Daniel Radcliffe (Because I'm a huge Harry Potter fan).

On our way there we walked by NPH, yes Neil ... wait for it ... Patrick Harris! Dooogie Howser/Barney Stinson himself! It was a brief encounter but quite enjoyable.

While waiting to see Harry Potter, I mean Daniel Radcliffe, we overheard from people who saw How to Succeed... that NPH was at that night's showing. NPH tweeted the next day that he went to the matinee showing of Catch Me If You Can (missed him by a day!). I think he's getting ready for the Tony Awards, which he will be hosting on June 12th.

You would think that that was enough, well think again.

The following night we went to Greenwich for dinner at Benny's Burritos (a cheap and delicious Mexican restaurant). We heard that the finale of Celebrity Apprentice was being filmed at NYU so we walked over after dinner. We got there just in time and were right by the exit where all the celebrity contestants exited.

The highlights of that night are:

- Shaking hands with Latoya Jackon & Marlee Matlin;
- Singing a Meat Loaf song to Meat Loaf ("I will do anything for love")
- My friend telling Star Jones that she loves her and hates Nene and then telling Nene that she loves her and hates Star Jones.
- Everyone yelling "WHAT!?" and "YA" to Lil John
- The Donald. Turns out when you start yelling stuff about the Presidential Race you really get his attention.

I always have a great time in NYC, even when I don't see any celebs but let's face it, seeing all of them in one weekend was pretty awesome.

Summer Fun List #55, Inside Out

By reader suggestion, I added Inside Out to my Summer Fun List this year.

And while my busy social calendar dictated my attendance at just one screening, I was glad to make it out to the queer film festival, now in its 21st year.

On Friday I took in a program of short films entitled Brief Encounters at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.

The six shorts followed clandestine get-togethers, drunken hook-ups and chance meetings, illustrating that sometimes the briefest encounters can have the greatest impact.

Though the screened films all fit the theme, they ranged in story and tone. In The Light, a Canadian film, opened the series with a cute story of personal revelation when two men wake up after a passionate one-night stand.

Along The Road, a Swedish film, depicts a roadside hookup between two truckers with differing priorities.

Student Body, the program's second Canadian entry, featured a high school student who's hot for teacher and turns to online hookups to explore his sexuality.

Things took a decidedly dramatic tun with The Casuarina Cove, a film from Singapore in which a man recounts how he had been arrested after cruising in the Tanjohn Rhu area many years earlier.

Watch Over Me, a film from Israel, features a supernatural twist, while American film Breach of Etiquette brings the action to a commune in the mountains of northwest New Mexico.

Brief Encounters turned out to be a great way for me to check out a number of entertaining GLBT films in one fell swoop. (The fact that they were shorts was coincidentally ideal, due to my short attention span).

While I naturally enjoyed the playful In The Light, I was easily engaged by the brooding tone of Watch Over Me and mysterious feel of Breach of Etiquette.

The Look: Selena Gomez in Dolce & Gabbana

As Selena Gomez grows up, so does her look, as she impressed at Monday's Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas.

The 18-year-old Wizards of Waverly star wore a slinky black Dolce & Gabbana number, featuring gathered waist, cutouts at the torso and a revealing slit.

She accessorized with a pair of fun red Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, featuring shimmering bows, and a black Judith Lieber clutch.

Ms. Gomez opted for sleek, straight locks parted in the middle to complete her red carpet look.

With maturing style like this, I have a feeling she'll soon outgrow her fake romance with Justin Bieber.

Billy Elliot's got the beat, and then some

[I saw Billy Elliot with my parents on April 19, and wrote my initial review immediately following. It's shamefully taken this long to polish up].

We were only minutes into the Mirvish production of Billy Elliot at Toronto's Canon Theatre when the talent displayed on the stage prompted goosebumps up and down my arms. We were in for a great night of theatre, I knew at that moment.

Not having seen the 2000 film of the same name, the only background I had to the story was what the program told me: It took place in 1984, as the British National Union of Mineworkers went on strike to save the coal industry from the threatened closures of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

As young Billy Elliot's father and older brother go on strike and struggle for their livelihoods, he goes on his own journey of self-determination. After stumbling upon a ballet class and realizing he might have a talent for dancing, Billy secretly attends weekly lessons while his family thinks he's at boxing class.

Now you better believe a production named Billy Elliot relies strongly on its lead actor, and on this night 12-year-old Myles Erlick delivered. One of six Billys who rotate through the Toronto production, he portrays Billy as a boy teetering between vulnerable and determined, unsure and developing confidence in his new found talent.

There is no need to question Erlick's talent, however -- his dancing is nothing short of breathtaking. The vigour, strength and agility with which he dances ballet and tap numbers is truly awe-inspiring. It also made me think what a wonderful experience it must be for such a young performer to command a stage, and in turn an audience, with such force.

Of particular note are two standout performances by young Billy. Pre-intermission, a rage-filled Billy dances against a backdrop of riots after his father discovers he's been spending his time dancing, and demands he stop. In the second act, Billy dances a hopeful performance with an older version of himself.

Billy's dancing pursuit is helped along the way by a number of expertly-executed supporting characters. Kate Hennig commands the stage whenever she's on it, as Billy's ballet teacher Mrs. Wilkinson. As she pushes Billy to pursue dancing despite what others might think, she grows into a mother figure for the boy, whose own mom is deceased. A force to be reckoned with, who also shares tender moments with Billy, she quickly became one of my favourite characters.

Meanwhile, Billy's friend Michael, played by Dillon Stevens, provides a little comic relief. As a boy who likes the play dress-up in women's clothes, he helps show Billy it's okay to be different, effectively pushing the show's main message: to be yourself, no matter what.

This manifests itself in a lively song and dance number that sees both boys playing dress-up, and soon joined by a number of giant dresses dancing backup. Though it felt a little out of place with the rest of the show's tone, it also felt typically Broadway and served as a welcome moment of levity. (It also made me wonder what role Elton John may have played in pushing such a number, as he created the music for this show).

In addition to the strength of the lead and ensemble performances, the production's original staging expertly interweaves Billy's personal story against a backdrop of union picketing, police raids and chants from both sides. Billy's story of hope for his own future in dancing is countered by a more sombre tone provided by those workers whose futures are indefinitely uncertain.

Billy Elliot beautifully joins an emotional story with stunning performances to create a truly engaging and original theatre experience.

Oh, and take it from me -- don't even try to fight the goosebumps; they'll stick around for the full two and half hours.

Amy Poehler: Harvard College Class Day speech

Amy Poehler spoke to the graduating class of 2011 at Harvard Class Day yesterday, relaying a series of funny and poignant messages along the way.

The Parks & Recreation star used her career in comedy to emphasize the importance of leaning on other people in good times and bad.

Even though I graduated four years ago (holy shit), Poehler did a great job speaking of lessons we can all apply to our daily lives.

"When you feel scared, hold someone's hand and look into their eyes. And when you feel brave, do the same thing," Poehler suggested.

She also said a lot of funny things, but that was the quote I wound back and rewatched a few times.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to listen to Vitamin C's Graduation Song while watching a slideshow of photos from Carleton journalism grad 2007.

Tears may be shed.

On the cover: Ryan Reynolds for Details

Ryan Reynolds takes a squat on the June/July cover of Details Magazine.

I can't say squatting is the sexiest position for a man to take, but Ryan's still pretty in the face so I'll overlook it. Also, I like his shoes.

In the mag, Ryan's friend and The Proposal costar Sandra Bullock says the Vancouver-born actor hasn't forgotten his roots.

“He constantly talks of the healing powers of maple syrup," she says. "I don’t know if that’s a Canadian trait, but it’s always uncomfortable when it comes up.”

“I love Canada,” Reynolds says when told about Bullock’s view of his nationality. “It makes a nice hat for America. When America runs out of water, it’s the first place I’ll go. I gotta go home. I haven’t been there in a long, long time.”

I'd say Canada holds a lot more value than being America's hat, but hey, at least he may visit for a drink of water one day.

Reynolds has two movies being released this summer: Green Lantern on June 17, and The Change-Up, a comedy costarring Jason Bateman, out August 5.

For Ryan's full Details cover story, click here, and ch-check out more photos by Matthias Vriens-McGrath after the cut.

Bridesmaids alternate takes

If you haven't seen Bridesmaids yet, what are you waiting for?

And if you have, you'll likely enjoy the collection of alternate takes Funny Or Die collected that didn't make the movie.

With that cast full of improv-wizards, it must have been hard deciding which shots made the final cut and which hit the editing room floor.

All this makes me more excited for a DVD release that better be full of extras.

Also, Melissa McCarthy is my new comedy hero thanks to this movie.

That is all.

Mindy Kaling: 'Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me' excerpt

The Office writer and costar Mindy Kaling has a new book coming out in November, and based on exerpts that have hit the internet, I think it will quickly find its way to my collection.

Titled 'Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns,' Kaling writes about friendship, boys and other life tangents in a casual, conversational tone that makes her sound like a real friend.

She opens the book with a short essay about why you don't want to peak in high school.
Teenage girls, please don’t worry about being super popular in high school, or being the best actress in high school, or the best athlete. Not only do people not care about any of that the second you graduate, but when you get older, if you reference your successes in high school too much, it actually makes you look kind of pitiful, like some babbling old Tennessee Williams character with nothing going on in their current life. What I’ve noticed is that no one who was a big star in high school is also a big star later in life, except athletes. For us overlooked kids, it’s so wonderfully fair.

I was never the lead in the play. I don’t think I went to a single party with alcohol at it. No one shared pot with me. It wasn’t until I was sixteen that I even knew marijuana and pot were the same thing.

Because I was largely ignored at school, I watched everyone like an observant weirdo, not unlike Eugene Levy’s character Dr. Allan Pearl, from Waiting for Guffman, who famously “sat next tothe class clown, and studied him. But I did that with everyone. It has helped me so much as a writer you have no idea.

I just want ambitious teenagers to know it is totally fine to be quiet, observant kids. Besides being a delight to your parents, you will find you have plenty of time later to catch up . . . Sit next to the class clown and study him. Then grow up, take everything you learn, and get paid to be a real-life clown, unlike whatever unexciting thing the actual high school class clown is doing now. I think our class clown is doing marketing in Warwick, Connecticut.

Forget teenage girls, I'm pretty sure Mindy just described my high school experience.

More online excerpts include Mindy's take on men's style, best friend rights and responsibilities and non-traumatic things that have made her cry.

Click here to ch-check out those excerpts in full, and look out for the book come November!

Summer Fun List #43, Montreal

My long weekend was well-spent sitting in the park in Montreal.

My friend Miss Jackay (formerly Jackie) spent last summer in Montreal looking for Kristen Stewart, and recently returned to almost have coffee with Nicki Minaj.

Though I've visited Montreal a number of times in the past, it was nice to get more of a local's experience this time around.

We relaxed, ate, drank, planked, and photographed ourselves spontaneously laughing.

Highlights inside.

Montreal #hunkwatch2011

Through a series of tweets last week, Miss Jackay and I dubbed my trip to Montreal #hunkwatch2011. I could try to explain how that happened, but I'm not completely sure myself and those details are pretty irrelevant.

Upon my arrival, however, we decided we better discuss what kind of hunk we were looking for. While we both appreciate a generally attractive man, we felt the word hunk connotes a certain type of attractiveness.

In my attempt to define the term, I rambled on using words like "tall," "broad," and "muscular."

I used A.C. Slater as a classic 90s example, and Ryan Reynolds as a modern-day hunk.

Miss Jackay agreed with these terms, and off we went, keeping an eye out for hunks wherever we went.

We quickly realized, however, that spotting a true hunk in the places we visited wasn't as easy as hoped.

We spotted a hockey hunk at Buvette, who had the right build but could be slightly cuter in the face.

And at the park on Saturday I spotted a slightly older gentleman hunk, who I certainly wouldn't say no to. I think he noticed me staring, as he put his shirt on and left just as I spotted him.

But for most of #hunkwatch2011 we identified a number of almost-hunks, who quite frankly just didn't have the stature of my ideal hunk vision.

That changed on Sunday, however.

Kelly Clarkson on-set of new photo shoot

Kelly Clarkson grabs a hold of her new puppy Joplin on set of a photo shoot for her new album.

The original American Idol posted the photo on her Facebook page over the weekend.

On the right she's pictured with the shoot's crew, of which she wrote "An awesome team and a great shoot!"

After a number of delays, Kelly's new album is expected to be released in September, with her first single hitting radio in July.

Producer Rodney Jenkins recently revealed he worked with Kelly on a "crazy pop-rock" song called 'I Forgive You' for the album.

"The first person who came into my head to do it was Kelly Clarkson. So I sent it immediately and got a response that night," he says. "She came out to record, the energy was great and I just finished mixing it. She nailed it. It turned out great."

Can't wait to hear it! This summer needs more Kelly Clarkson!

Alanis Morissette's anniversary song

into a king by alanismorissette

Alanis Morissette may have her hands full with her six-month-old son Ever, but the Canadian songstress hasn't been too busy to celebrate her first wedding anniversary by writing a new song.

Alanis wrote and produced the adorable 'Into A King' to celebrate her one-year wedding anniversary with Mario 'Souleye' Treadway, and posted the song to the internet over the weekend.

"Happy anniversary baby, you’ve gone from a prince into a king," Alanis sings. "Happy anniversary darling, I’ve gone from a maiden to a queen."

The song is just too cute, and really reflects how happy Alanis is with her young family.

Also, how cool would it be to be married to Alanis Morissette, and have her write songs for you on special occasions? I can't even. Just love.

First look: The Muppets trailer

Last week we got a first look at a promo poster for The Muppets, and now we're treated to the highly-anticipated big-screen feature's first trailer!

Starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams as a struggling couple, the duo meet the Muppets in L.A. and help them stage a reunion show to save their old theatre.

Based on this sneak peek, the Muppets' return to the big screen sure does look like a whole lot of fun.

Featuring good ol' fashioned goofy comedy, head-bopping musical numbers and all our favourite Muppets, its release can't come soon enough!

So damn fine: Ryan Gosling at Cannes

I was so tickled with Ryan Gosling's fashion choices as he made the rounds at the Cannes International Film Festival last week promoting his indie film Drive.

With the help of Salvatore Ferragmo, our fine Canadian heartthrob wore anything but basic black, and I love him for it.

Click inside for three choice looks on RyGos and let me know which you like best!

Join us at Planking Canada!

Admit it. You like lying down.

Now what if I told you there was a fun new game that involves lying down wherever you want?!

You're intrigued, aren't you?

One fateful night in fall 2010, a couple friends and I decided to go out for a Thursday drink. On the way home, one of said friends decided to lie face down in front of a school for a photo op.

Bizarre behaviour, I thought.

Until months later, through the magic of the internet, I discovered there were thousands of other people in the world who also like lying face down on things!

Planking, I discovered, is all the rage in Australia. And it literally involves lying face down on whatever you want and taking photos.

Once we knew planking was a thing in Australia, my friends and I decided to blaze a trail for Canadian plankers.

We quickly built up our portfolio of planking photos, lying face down in bars, karaoke venues and on sidewalks.

We then created the original Canadian Facebook group dedicated to planking. It's called Planking Canada.

That was a mere four weeks ago. And since then, you've likely noticed, Planking Canada has hit the mainstream.

This week we were featured in a Globe & Mail story, a story on CBC's The National, and in a Yahoo! News story about how Planking Canada became a story on CBC's The National.

Imagine! A story about our silly little Facebook group being introduced by the one and only Peter Mansbridge.

Ch-check out how fun planking looks by watching the National story above, then come join us at the Planking Canada group.

And in the words of our spokesperson Cal Irvine, "Plank often, and plank safe."

The Look: Gwen Stefani in L.A.M.B.

Gwen Stefani is having quite the fashionable week!

(Though I guess we hardly see Gwen not wearing something notable).

After rocking a Stella McCartney jumpsuit at the Cannes International Film Festival earlier this week, Gwen glammed it up for amfAR's 2011 Cinema Against AIDS Gala last night.

The 41-year-old No Doubt frontwoman wore a stunning design from her own L.A.M.B. line.

The form-fitting halter dress featured a mermaid hemline, and thin gold belt.

Gwen accessorized with a Roger Vivier ‘Miss Viv Punk’ clutch, and a tuxedoed Gavin Rosdale on her arm.

Perfect makeup and slick hair completed the look.

Bridesmaids is fantastic!

Add me to the (huge, never-ending) list of people who love the new comedy film Bridesmaids.

Kristen Wiig is in fine form as Annie, a down-on-her-luck single woman whose lifelong best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) chooses as her maid of honour.

While the marketing set me up for a buddy comedy, the story is a lot more about Annie fighting. Fighting for her friendship with Lillian in the face of rich and way-too-perfect bridesmaid Helen (Rose Byrne); fighting to keep herself afloat after she recently lost all her money opening up a now-bankrupt bakery; and fighting her insecurities long enough to keep hold of an awesome new man in her life.

Wiig's portrayal of Annie combines her signature comedic mannerisms and line-delivery with subtle emotion that makes the character real. So real that after an hour and a half of watching her hit new lows, you just want the girl to catch a break.

For the most part, however, Annie's term as bridesmaid keeps you laughing out loud. With a supporting cast of bridesmaids that includes Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLendon-Covey, the movie's brimming with crass humour, foul language, physical comedy and (perhaps most importantly) finely-tuned characters with chemistry.

Speaking of fine chemistry, can we take a second to recognize the greatness that is Chris O'Dowd as Annie's patrol officer love interest Rhodes? The tall glass of Irishman was cast so well, I fell in love with him from his first appearance.

He also helped contribute to some of the more charming, quieter scenes focused on character interaction that ebbed and flowed through the movie so effortlessly.

Bridesmaids succeeds in bringing a group of talented actors together to portray characters who are both hilarious and genuine. As Annie pursues both friendship and love throughout the movie, you might even find a moment to feel your heart warming between the laughter.

First Look: Muppets movie poster

Well here's an exciting image.

It's the first promo poster for the upcoming Muppets movie, due in theatres November 23.

Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Animal and Gonzo are walking right toward us with the tagline "They're closer than you think."

"We wanted the first poster to remind people how much they love the Muppets of their youth," the film's co-writer and co-star Jason Segel says.

The movie sees our favourite Muppets stage a reunion show to save their old theatre.

"Entertainment changed. It became about animation, violence and cynicism. The Muppets sort of lost their place," Segel says of where we find Kermit and co. at the movie's outset. "In the movie, we acknowledge that the Muppets had some rough years and went their own separate ways to start their own careers."

I for one can't wait to see them come back together! Will you see the new Muppets movie in November?

Need to know: CBS renewals, pickups, cancellations

Scanning CBS's 2011-2012 schedule, it's kind of shocking I don't watch any of the network's shows.

The eye net's got a ton of hits, and only room for a few new shows, and yet I'm not loyal to any of these series.

Full schedule details here, highlights below:

RENEWED: The Good Wife, How I Met Your Mother, Mike & Molly, Hawaii Five-0, NCIS, NCIS: LA, Survivor, Criminal Minds, CSI, CSI: New York, The Big Bang Theory, Rules of Engagement, CSI: Miami, The Amazing Race

WON'T DIE: Two And A Half Men (with new cast member Ashton Kutcher)

NEW SERIES: Waitressing sitcom 2 Broke Girls with Kat Dennings; buddy sitcom How To Be A Gentleman; crime-solving dramas Unforgettable and Person of Interest; surgeon-meets-supernatural drama A Gifted Man starring Patrick Wilson

MIDSEASON: NYPD drama The 2-2, executive produced by Robert DeNiro

CANCELED: Mad Love, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, $#*! My Dad Says, The Defenders

Amy Poehler talks TV

So I have to tell you once again, over the course of this television season I've fallen in love with Parks & Recreation.

In fact, it's quickly become my favourite part of NBC's Thursday night comedy lineup. Yeah, soak in that statement. It's true.

Anyone who watches the show knows its star Amy Poehler is one of its greatest sources of charm and humour.

Poehler's on the cover of New York Magazine's TV issue right now, and discusses her TV favourites with the mag. Check it:
Which TV characters schooled you in acting?
Laverne and Shirley was physical and broad, and I loved those characters. Law & Order’s Lieutenant Anita van Buren is a great example of a tough lady among men. Omar Little from The Wire—one of the best bad good guys, or good bad guys, on TV. Animal from The Muppets, who taught me when in doubt, go crazy [laughs]. And Cliff, from Cheers.

If you were physically incapacitated and could watch only one show for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Law & Order. I panic that there will be a time when it isn’t on TV. When I’m not in New York it makes me miss New York. I think about all the people angry that their streets are being closed off [cackles]. And I feel like Jerry Orbach might be someone that I will get to meet in Heaven.

If you could go back in time and play any character, who would it be?
Alex P. Keaton from Family Ties. He had good jokes. Or Mr. Roarke from Fantasy Island. I would love to welcome people to my island, on TV or in life. Hopefully my career will go well enough that I’ll be welcoming you all to an island and I’ll have some weird potion that everyone drinks, which leads to scary, trippy sex times.

Brady Bunch or Partridge Family?
Brady Bunch. And Happy Days and Little House on the Prairie. If you ever need a great afternoon nap, put on Little House. The sound of the music and the horses galloping puts you to sleep, and then you can wake up and they’re usually caught in some kind of storm and you can cry.

What about straight-up comedy influences?
All in the Family was my favorite sitcom growing up. I loved Archie Bunker—like all my favorite characters, he seemed to live when I wasn’t watching. I could picture what he did over the weekend.

Man, there's something I just love about TV stars discussing their TV addictions.

On the cover: Alexander Skarsgard for GQ

Alexander Skarsgard looks smokin' fine on the June 2011 cover of GQ.

In addition to a new season of True Blood, The 34-year-old Swedish actor stars in no less than three movies in the coming year, and uses a simile about marbles to discuss his approach to Hollywood.

"Hollywood can be like kids playing marbles on the schoolyard," he says. "Everybody wants the shiny marble until one kid says he doesn't. Then nobody will touch it. So it's important that I make good decisions now."

While he makes those decisions, Skarsgard has True Blood to fall back on, which he appreciates.

"The nice thing is that as long as I'm doing this TV show, I've got fuck-you money," he says. "So I can say no to things. I never want to be in a position where I can't defend why I said yes."

I certainly hope the return of True Blood leads to more gorgeous Alexander Skarsgard photo shoots.

Oh hey there, Chord Overstreet

Glee's Chord Overstreet was photographed at the Wango Tango concert in Los Angeles over the weekend, where he debuted a new shorter, darker 'do.

“At the end of the season, I just wanted a haircut, so I cut it all off. I cut the highlights out," he says of his new look.

Boy was cute before, but going darker and getting rid of his Bieber bangs is a major upgrade.

I like.

The Look: Gwen Stefani in Stella McCartney

Gwen Stefani turned heads as she arrived at the red carpet premiere of Tree Of Life yesterday in Cannes.

The 41-year-old No Doubt singer donned a bold and shimmering Stella McCartney jumpsuit in black.

Featuring a super low neckline and wide-legged pants, she accessorized with a Roger Vivier Boite de Nuit clutch.

Applying the motto "go big or go home" to both her hair and her smoky eyes, Gwen finished off the look with summery pink lips.

What do you think of Gwen Stefani's Cannes ensemble?

Flinstones to make comeback in 2013

One exciting bit of news to emerge from yesterday's FOX upfront is that classic animated comedy The Flinstones will be making a return to TV in 2013.

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is taking the helm to reboot the series.

And though the humour may be updated for present day audiences, the series will still reflect the Hanna Barbera classic, following two middle-class families -- the Flinstones and the Rubbles -- living in the dinosaur-era town of Bedrock.

"The very first cartoon character I drew at age two was Fred Flintstone," MacFarlane said in a statement. "So it's appropriate that events have come full circle, allowing me to produce the newest incarnation of this great franchise. Plus, I think America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat, stupid guy with a wife who's too good for him."

Here's hoping for an epic return of a beloved TV classic!

On the cover: Adele for Out

Adele looks so damn gorgeous on the June 2011 cover of Out, and in the mag's pages continues being her candid, humble self to make me love her even more.

“I always say I’m a singing lady, rather than a singer,” the 22-year-old British songstress says. “Singer is a big word for me. My interpretation of a singer is Etta James and Carole King and Aretha Franklin.”

Despite the massive success of her sophomore album 21, Adele stays grounded and has no plans to change.

“I’ve met people I admire, and people I don’t admire who are completely affected by their success, and I fucking hate them,” she says. “There’s so many people who believe their own hype and treat people like shit, and if I was ever like that I would absolutely stop doing what I’m doing for a while and go and find myself again.”

As for the success of 21, Adele readily credits the failed relationship which inspired the collection of songs.

“I don’t think I’ll ever forgive myself for not making my relationship with my ex on 21 work, because he’s the love of my life,” she says, before adding that she would have been willing to give up everything for him. “Well, I would still be singing in the shower, of course, but yeah -- my career, my friendships, my hobbies. I would have given up trying to be the best.

“He made me really weak, but at the same time really fucking fearless, so I managed to channel that. I don’t know if I’ll ever beat this album in terms of how people connect to it.”

Adele's full Out cover story is online, and it's a great read!

Vintage Ryan Gosling

So I recently came across a video interview with Ryan Gosling from 1998, when he's training to take on the role of Young Hercules in the short-lived kids series.

And since I thought it was cute, and I know many an Out Is Through reader who appreciates a Ryan Gosling post, I thought I would share it with you.

It's fun watching Mr. Gosling be all humble about his career prospects, and knowing he goes on to become an Oscar-nominated actor and swoonworthy hunk.

Unfortunately the video won't embed properly, so you're going to have to head over here to watch it. Ryan Gosling enthusiasts won't mind though, right?

The Look: Rachel McAdams in Marchesa

Rachel McAdams proved to be quite the fashionista as she made the rounds at the Cannes International Film Festival last week.

The 32-year-old Canadian actress turned heads in a stunning Marchesa gown at the premiere of her film Midnight In Paris on Wednesday night.

Combining strategically placed red silk organza with tulle, the gown featured a daring neckline, cap sleeves and dramatic train.

Rachel paired the dress with a pair of gold heels, and finished the look with elegant curls and matching red lips.

This is but one of a number of looks Rachel rocked around Cannes last week. Click inside to see more, and let me know which you like best!

Brothers & Sisters canceled

ABC has canceled Brothers & Sisters after five seasons, the network announced yesterday.

That means its season finale, which aired last week, has now become its series finale.

I'd love to say this news saddens me, but to be honest I was kind of hoping B&S would be canceled.

While I loved the show in its heyday, this season was just incredibly disappointing and I found myself only watching out of loyalty. The one-year fast-forward between seasons just didn't work for me, and the show dropped all the storylines I was engaged with last season.

With its reduced cast, Calista Flockhart's part-time status, and fewer of those ever-entertaining Walker dinners, this season just felt like a shell of Brothers & Sisters' former self.

ABC was reportedly debating this week the possibility of bringing B&S back for a sixth abbreviated season next year to wrap up storylines. But in the end, the network cut Sally Field, Rachel Griffiths, Flockhart and company loose.

I've yet to watch the season five finale, so don't have any feelings about how well it worked (if at all) as a series finale.

In addition to B&S, ABC announced V, Better With You, Off The Map, Mr. Sunshine, and Detroit 1-8-7 are also canceled.

Kelly Clarkson: Tell Me A Lie

A new Kelly Clarkson song called Tell Me A Lie has leaked to the internet, which Ms. Clarkson herself says may not be on her upcoming album.

"I just heard another demo of mine leaked. I don't know how or who is doing it but they're demos and not the real deal," Kelly posted on her Facebook page today, referring to the pop jam. "I record a ton of songs I write and songs that other people write when I'm making an album. Sorry for the confusion."

After a long wait Kelly's new album will be released in September, but we won't have to wait that long to hear a legit track from it.

"I promise y'all I'm just as anxious to get my cd out!" the singer continued on Facebook. "The recording is all done and now we're finishing up with mixing the record and getting ready to release the single in July."

Ooh -- sounds like the perfect birthday gift for me. Thanks, Kelly!

In the meantime, what do you think of Tell Me A Lie? I like it, and would welcome its inclusion on the album

Summer Fun List #3, TFC Game

Saturday night I headed to my first ever Toronto FC soccer game at BMO Field with Ashley and friends, to watch the local team take on Houston.

I was in good company, as I joined David Miller on the Dufferin bus down to the Ex. He was all decked out in TFC gear, and I wanted to tell him how I missed him as mayor. I did not follow through, however.

The soccer game turned out to be a great way to kick off my Summer Fun List. Highlights:

1. The shining sun felt just so lovely on my face. I can't wait to get a tan.

2. I loved looking into the stands and seeing a sea of red, which made me feel both Toronto and Canada pride. I don't own a lot of red clothing, so wore my white jacket over top a black v-neck, and accessorized with my red plastic wayfarers. Seemed to do the trick.

3. Our last-minute tickets coincidentally got us seats in the lively fan zone, which proved super entertaining as the crowd in front of us sang, danced, jumped and chanted throughout the night. I only wish I knew the words to their cheers to sing along, though observing was just as fun. My fave song (and the crowd's too -- they kept returning to it) was the Depeche Mode classic I Just Can't Get Enough.

I will admit I probably watched the crowd as much as I watched the actual game. I came to realize through this Summer Fun experience that I really don't know much about the specifics of soccer. I liked how quickly the game progressed, however, as they don't stop the clock for anything.

The crowd's spirit only strengthened through the night, as Toronto scored two goals to win the game. Confetti flied! Scarves were twirled in the air! A middle-aged man took of his shirt, and had someone write "WHO ATE ALL DA PIE-RO" on his belly with a red bingo dabber, and "I ATE ALL DA PIE-RO" on his back!

I have no idea what that means, but I liked it.

If you've never been to a TFC game, I highly recommend it. Even if you're not into sports, if you're seated in the vicinity of the fan zone, you're in for an entertaining night.

Click inside for a brief video I took, of what I heard Ashley's brother refer to as a "free penalty kick." Spoiler alert: the result is in favour of Toronto.

Who Wore Chanel Couture Better: Bilson vs. Lively

Rachel Bilson and Blake Lively arrived to the Chanel Resort 2012 presentation in Cap d’Antibes, France on Monday, wearing -- what else?! -- Chanel Couture.

Bilson paired a shimmering, sleek tube top with black leather short-shorts, and accessorized with pointy-toed heels and a quilted black clutch.

Lively, as usual, showed off her legs for days in a black mini, paired with white top and black sequined jacket with jeweled embellishment.

Both gals look great, but I love the simplicity of Bilson's outfit, which really lets her beauty shine.

Which ensemble do you prefer?
